Hotel del Coronado Skating by the Sea and Historic Walking Tour
December 1 - January 31
Enjoy the beauty of the Hotel del Coronado and learn the story of how it came to be built in 1887 on what was then a barren island. The Del’s visionary founders dreamed of building a seaside resort that would be “the talk of the Western world.” Since then, the resort has become a living legend, visited by celebrities, dignitaries and U.S. presidents. In fact, publisher Rand McNally recognized the Hotel del Coronado for enjoying “more fame and historical significance than perhaps any hotel in North America.”
Docents of the Coronado Museum of History and Art lead tours on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 am, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 pm. Reservations are required. Private group tours may be arranged. Price for adults is $15 and children 12 and under are free. For an even more historic day, include some ice skating by the Pacific Ocean before or after your walking tour.
The Del is celebrating the eighth anniversary of Skating by the Sea, a unique Southern California experience – outdoor ice-skating overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The oceanfront Windsor Lawn is transformed into a spectacular ice rink with skating sessions offered daily. A portion of the skating proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of San Diego.
The ice skating experience is open now through December 14, and January 2-5 from 2pm to 5pm, and 6pm - 9pm daily with weekend and holiday matinees from 11am to 1pm. From December 15 through January 1, come skate by the sea from 2pm to 5pm and 6pm to 9pm daily, with 11am to 1pm matinees.
New this year: Avoid waiting in line at the skate shack! You can now pre-purchase your ice skating tickets online. Skating waivers must be printed out and signed for each participant in advance. Three-hour sessions cost $25 for adults and $20 for kids ages 10 and under. The two-hour matinee session costs $20 for adults and $15 for kids ages 10 and under (skate rentals are included in the price).
