On Tuesday June 30, 2015, I received a call from West Inn & Suites while I was out walking around San Diego. No message, no worry, as I confirmed a day prior. A second call and no message, so I called back. Nick (one of the managers was trying to reach me about a room situation.) Nick explained that the room I booked was over-sold and he had a couple of options available for our stay. I listened to his offers and took what was best for our needs. Thank you for calling me, he was very Professional and generous.
Once we arrived on July 1st, I knew it was going to be early, as we were coming up from San Diego, and Nick said it was OK to precheck in and grab the shuttle to Legoland. We did and our driver was Michelle (one of the twins working there, her sister is Cherry, YES like the fruit.) She was funny, personable and a great driver. She asked the basics and such, like where we were from, why are we here, as in the universe and such (kidding she really didn't ask about the universe,) while we drove to the drop-off point. (They provide booster seats and car seats for those with little ones, we had our 3 year old with us.) Michelle also does front desk duties as well. The drive was about 10 minutes or so from the hotel. She gave me a card to contact when a return was requested and they suggest calling an hour ahead before returning or prebook, as they fill up with other guest requests.
Once I arrived back to West Inn, my wife and daughter were still at Legoland, I checked in, got the keys and unloaded the car. We hadn't stayed here since 2011 and it's still the same. Rooms are bright and clean. Fresh smelling linens and fluffy towels. Staff is always friendly and respectful of the guests. We had a 2 King room instead of the 2 King Suite, the room we were in was fantastic and just right for our family needs.
They do allow dogs, so be aware of that. It's not a problem, as I am not allergic to dogs. Having not stayed there in 4 years, one would expect to see a little wear and tear, not so, they grounds are well manicured and lots of color from the diverse plant life throughout the property. The interior of the property from the lobby, dining area to the hallways are clean and fresh. The pool area is clean and free of clutter.
Come Morning time they offer a nice breakfast featuring eggs, cereals, breads and bagels, as well as muffins and pastry. They will either have sausage or bacon it alternates. Pancakes or French Toast or Waffles. They offer a variety of drink choices ranging from coffee to teas and juices and milk. In the evening time they offer Milk and Cookies starting around 8 pm. After first wave of kids hits and when the cookie dust cloud settles, whats left are a few chocolate chips and a dram of milk. But don't fret, around 830 they replenish the milk & cookie bar, and while all those kids are sick in bed, the adults come down and grab a cookie or 2 and a fresh glass of milk.
A few of the pluses that make it a must when staying in Carlsbad. First, the location, its within walking distance to the Pacific Ocean. Second, FREE parking and shuttle service within a certain distance. Third, Ultra Friendly staff and Super clean facilities, even the laundry rooms. Fourth, There are 2 restaurants on site, Bistro West and West Steak & Seafood. Both aren't cheap, especially the latter. The food is top notch and fresh, and the staff is always on point and friendly. Bistro West is a little more casual and kid friendly versus West Steak. Fifth, the beds are very comfortable, and having to come back to my "mattress" for lack of a better term, is unbearable. By the way, what brand are your mattresses? They felt like clouds, haven't slept like that in 3 years! ;)
Sure West Inn is located near the I5 and the Coaster tracks, but that's the nature of being that close to the Pacific. The train is a little bothersome, especially if you haven't stayed here before, but after the first night, its hardly noticeable. Yes this place is very kid friendly, however, you won't hear them running around late at night, slamming doors or even screaming in the rooms. By the time 9 PM rolls around, and after 8 hours at Legoland, 10 chocolate chip cookies and a gallon of milk from the lobby, who has time to make a ruckus at the resort? My only real personal complaint is that the smoking area is right at the back door and is unsavory. I'd like to see it moved further back across the parking lot, but that may not be feasible with the lack of space. Overall West Inn & Suites gets 5 Stars. Those 30+ people who rated this place less than 4 stars must not have stayed here! IMO..
On behalf of my wife and daughter, we'd like to extend a heartfelt Thank You for such an awesome time and stay. You are a shining beacon in the Carlsbad travel industry. And anyone in the area who runs a resort needs to take some lessons on how you conduct business!!! You know we have choices to stay when in the area, but it's the service that brings the people back each time. The staff is highly trained and knowledgeable about the area and resort. They are warm and inviting and deserve the accolades they receive!
